New Hybrid ferries for SFK

News, Projects

While working on the construction of the first hybrid ferry for Schlepp – und Fährgesellschaft Kiel (SFK), the keel laying for the second, fully electric, ferry took place on Wednesday April 1, 2020 at Holland Shipyards Group’s yard in Hardinxveld-Giessendam, The Netherlands.

In May 2019, SFK awarded Holland Shipyards Group for the design and delivery of a new ferry, named “Gaarden”. During the construction of this first ferry, SFK opted for the design and delivery of a second ferry, named “Düsternbrook”.

Both vessels are part of the long-overdue re-generation of the city’s passenger fleet. Opting to build this second ferry at Holland Shipyards Group is in line with the ambition of the city of Kiel to ensure consistency in their fleet, and also fits perfectly within its goals to provide zero-emission public transport in the area of Kiel.

Vera Navis is proud to be a trusted supplier on detailed engineering services for Holland Shipyards and contribute for the second ferry “Düsternbrook” project by providing basic, structural and systems detail design.

Fully-Electric Ferries to GVB Amsterdam

Homepage, News, Projects

Amsterdam Public transport company GVB has awarded Holland Shipyards Group a contract to build five new Fully-electric Ferries which will be operating in the North Sea Canal area.
The first ferry is expected to enter service in 2021, the delivery of the last ferry will be in 2023.

The ferries, measuring 41,00 m long and 13,90 m wide, are intended to operate fully-electric and are charged by means of a 1.600 kW shore charging facility. Each ferry has a battery capacity of 2 x 340 kWh and a propulsion capacity of 2 x300 kW. Charging the batteries takes approximately 3 minutes and is automatically done while boarding and unboarding the passengers and vehicles. They will be able to carry 20 cars, 4 trucks or 400 passengers per crossing.

Vera Navis is proud to be a trusted supplier on detailed engineering services for Holland Shipyards and contribute for this project by providing basic, structural and systems detail design.
